For The "PRO in MOTION"«¤»

Q: I'm in discussions with one of my clients who is delivering an e-book
online. His concern is that with a money-back guarantee, the customer
can use the product - even make a copy of the file - derive the total
benefits from it - and then request a refund. How can e-book
publishers protect themselves from this situation? - Jim -
A: I have e-books for sale on one of my web sites. My guarantee is - if
you don't like it, I'll refund your money. No conditions - no questions asked.
Not long ago, a guy bought one of them with a credit card in the
morning. That afternoon, he sent me an email stating:
1) It downloaded too slow.
2) He didn't like the software I used for the e-book.
3) It was full of great information - and it was SO good that I should
be giving it away so everyone could have it. And ...
4) He wanted his money back!
I sent him his money back. Yep - I gave it away!
So, here's the deal. If we're going to work with software rather than
hard copies, I think we just have to take our knocks. We're going to
run into freeloaders online but the huge majority of people are honest.
In reality, refunds are rarely requested for good products. I've sold
several different e-books for months now and this is the first time
I was ever asked for a refund.
And, so what? What did it cost to produce that one e-book? I'd
rather eat the minimal credit card processing fee that freeloader costs
me once in awhile and keep the good-will of my customers. That's the
whole point of a guarantee. If our product is good, we won't get many
requests for refunds. If we're putting out junk, we'll get what we deserve.
Quibbling over the risks/costs of doing business is the mark of an
amateur. If we were selling a book in a store, a customer could
certainly buy it, read it and return it for a refund.
How many hard-back books are purchased and then passed around
from friend to friend, to half-price book store, etc., etc., etc.? For
that matter, do we really believe that some people don't pass around all
kinds of computer software - in spite of the licensing agreements?
We have to look at the big picture here. An online business will have to
absorb losses just the same as any business down on Main Street.
Guarantees are mandatory to represent top customer care by an online professional.
