A Guide to Choosing An Affiliate/Associate Program

What exactly is an Affiliate Program, you may ask.

Associate and affiliate programs are turning out to be the
fastest growing area of E-commerce.  They allow website
owners to partner with retailers and offer products and
services to their visitors.  It's a mutually beneficial
relationship that can generate a wide-range audience for
the seller and a hassle free income for the associate.
The seller processes all orders, handles shipment and
provides a commission to the referring website owner.
The affiliate or associate promotes the sellers business
through banners and text links at their website and through
advertising in Ezines, Free Classifieds, etc.


Before joining any Program there are a few things that
you need to consider.

1. Does the program compliment your Website?
Be sure to select a program that would be
of interest to your visitors.  If your website
is about golf you would select a program that
would be of interest to golfers.  There are
a few programs that appeal to a very large
audience that would compliment any site, such
as Internet Personals and Internet Auctions.

2. Is the Program Completely Explained?
Be sure you know all the terms and conditions
before joining.

3. What is the Commission Plan?
Is the commission percentage offered and the
minimum payout going to be easily achieved?
Will you have to wait months before you reach
the minimum payout amount to receive a check?
Make sure you understand the compensation plan.

4. Do they provide sales material and support?
Most programs offer banners and will provide
example html and text links.  Examples of E-zine
ads and Free Classified Ads are becoming more
common and are very helpful.  Try to make sure
the sales material gets updated regularly.


Tips to Promoting Your Affiliate Program

Do more than just placing a few banners on your website.
This will only generate a very small income.  You must
promote your website and affiliate programs on a daily basis.

Personal Endorsements with a text link produce much
better results than banners alone.  Be sure to use
personal endorsements.

Adversite your website and affiliate programs in e-zines
and newsletters.  They produce the best results.

Advertise at Yahoo at least twice a week.  Placing ads
with Yahoo will generate lots of traffice to your own
website and your affiliate sites.

Always apply what you have learned about advertising
and promotion from online sources such as websites, e-zines
and newsletters.

Explode your sales with the ultimate weapon:
Time Sensitive Offers

Some of you may know of the power of time sensitive offers.
There is a huge controversy brewing on certain parts of the
internet regarding the use of these offers, but I will tell
you that used appropriately, they are one of the most
powerful lead and sales generating tools ever invented.


Setting up a time sensitive offer means contacting a list
of prospects and offering them something special that will
only be available for a limited time.  It could be a special
price, it could be special bonuses, or even receiving
something for free; the catch is that you will have to
order by X date in order to receive these special deals.


I have seen this kind of offer create overwhelming response
that does not seem to happen with regular sales material.
Why does this happen?  I believe that the majority of people
who are interested in your sales material will often not
act immediately because you have not given them an
incentive to act immediately.


Let's face it we all have busy lives, other
responsibilities, and often we forget that something
interests us or we say:  Oh yes that will still be available
next week or next month or even next year, there is no need
to act today!  These are the customers you will most likely
lose and you have to do something to change that.  If you do
you will see an increase in sales that you would not
imagine is possible.  What is the change you should
implement in order to experience this growth?
Time Sensitive Offers.


Have you ever seen one day sales at major department stores
and the crowds that they draw in?  This is the power of the
time sensitive offer.  The people who plan these sales know
exactly what they are doing.  They draw in the crowds with a
time sensitive offer and then they close the deal.  This is
what your website should emulate.  This is what will bring
in more sales than your sales offers that do not extend a
time deadline.  This is an example of how you could put this
into effect:


On your website you sell three things: a book on baseball
for 39.95 a report on similar subject matter for 19.95 and
a set of videos for 99.95.  Make a package that for 72 hours
only (give a deadline and stick to it) if people order the
video package, you will throw in either the book, the
report or both.  You will see your sales increase
dramatically with this approach.  Here is how it could be
done even better.


Offer this deal, let your prospects know that this offer is
available but only if they collect a coupon and present it
at the time of sale.  This is not a print coupon like you
would find in a supermarket, this is an electronic coupon
that prospects must enter their names and email addresses
in order to claim.  If they don't order immediately, don't
fret, you can then use their email address to send them
follow up reminders until the 72 hour period has expired or
they ask you to stop (I always advocate smart opt-in email
never unsolicited email).  A great example of this
"electronic" coupon can be seen at J.Nicholas Schmidts
Profitstream site, stop by and take a look at his

This is the correct way to use a time sensitive offer.
Put together a package, make a deadline, offer an
electronic coupon and followup until the deadline.  As I
mentioned earlier some people are and have always used the
time sensitive offer as a marketing ploy.  They use a
deadline that always changes, the same offer is available 2
days or 3 weeks after it was supposed to expire.  This is
unethical and will cause you to lose sales.  But, if you use
time sensitive offers appropriately, you will see your
sales soar.
