Secrets to Applying for & Getting a Telecommuting Job

So, you finally found a few job listings for a work at home job that you would like to do
and feel you qualified to do. Now it's time for you to contact the Employer and
apply for the position.
The first thing you want to do is put together a professional
looking resume that is free of spelling and grammatical errors
(let's face it, if your resume has these types of errors in it an employer will not trust
you to be more careful and conscientious with the work they give you to do).
Proofread it a few times, maybe even have a friend or family member check it out too.
It is super important that your resume be flawless.
Now that you have your professional resume all done you need
to compose a short cover letter. First off you never want to
say anything like, "I am a stay at home mom", "I would like to
work at home to be with my kids" or "I would like more
information on your work at home opportunity. I need to be
sure it is for real.". That is a real turn off to an employer and chances are
your resume will end up in the circular file because you are more interested in your kids
or are suspicious of them.
When writing your cover letter try to put yourself in the
employer's shoes, what would impress you and catch your
interest enough to make you read the entire resume and want to
hire this person. This is very important to do because you
only have about 20 seconds to catch the reader's attention.
Here is an example of a cover letter to help you get started.
I am sending you my resume in response to your ad for <job title>. I
have the qualifications and skills that your company is looking for, and would like to be
considered for the position.
I have extensive <fill-in> and <fill-in> experience and enjoy working on
detail oriented projects. My background in <fill-in>, <fill-in> and
<fill-in> would be a great asset to your company.
My past working history has been to work under pressure and tight deadlines, and is not a
problem for me.
I am seeking offsite employment and have the necessary
background to be a professional telecommuter. This would
allow me the freedom to work more than the normal 40 hours
per week. I have a fully equipped high-end computer and
home office and am ready to start at a moment's notice.
You send out your cover letter and resume to a few companies.
Wait at least a week to follow up with a note confirming that
they received your resume and asking if you can provide them
with any additional information. In about a month follow up
once more asking if there is anything you can do to help with
the process. If you still do not get a response do not follow
up again. Just move on to the next job. This only means that
you were not the perfect match for that particular job.
After sending out a few resumes, bingo, you get a job. Now
what? Work as hard as you can and as many hours as possible.
Be eager and receptive to learning anything they may need you
to do. Offer your help with anything they may need. And by
all means let them know about skills you have that they are
not aware of.
Once you feel comfortable in your current job you will want to
start looking for new telecommuting opportunities to add to
your resume. Ask your present employer if they would mind
writing a short letter about your work habits and abilities so
that should you ever need it, you will have a reference for
future part-time telecommuting jobs. With that recommendation
and your present telecommuting job you will find that other
employers will be much quicker to hire you. As long as you
are willing to take on new challenges and show professionalism
you may just find yourself being sought out for telecommuting
positions.
Now that you are working from home, you need to do a few
things to ensure that you remain working at home. The best
ways to do that is to:
* Keep your resume up-to-date
* Don't stop looking for work - you never want to be between
jobs again.
* Always get a letter of reference from your employers.
* Make a list of positive remarks you have received from your
employers to show prospective employers.
* Volunteer for charities. Having this on your resume shows that
you are community minded and are willing to give your time and
knowledge to work for free. You will also be able to network
with the employers that support the charity, which will help you
to land more telecommuting jobs.
* Attend local business groups and networking events.
* Above all else, keep your chin up and stay positive. Working at
home is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. It
is completely worth the struggle and frustration you may
encounter along the way!
Keep in mind that no matter how terrific the job sounds, you
should never pay any up front fees. No matter what type of
job it is there is no legitimate reason to pay a fee for a job.

SUCCESS IS EASY, BUT SO IS NEGLECT

People often ask me how I became successful in that six-year
period of time while many of the people I knew did not. The
answer is simple: The things I found to be easy to do, they
found to be easy not to do. I found it easy to set the goals
that could change my life. They found it easy not to. I
found it easy to read the books that could affect my thinking
and my ideas. They found that easy not to. I found it easy
to attend the classes and the seminars, and to get around
other successful people. They said it probably really
wouldn't matter. If I had to sum it up, I would say what I
found to be easy to do, they found to be easy not to do. Six
years later, I'm a millionaire and they are all still blaming
the economy, the government, and company policies, yet they
neglected to do the basic, easy things.
In fact, the primary reason most people are not doing as well
as they could and should, can be summed up in a single word:
neglect.
It is not the lack of money - banks are full of money. It is
not the lack of opportunity - America, and much of the free
World, continues to offer the most unprecedented and abundant
opportunities in the last six thousand years of recorded
history. It is not the lack of books - libraries are full of
books - and they are free! It is not the schools - the
classrooms are full of good teachers. We have plenty of
ministers, leaders, counselors and advisors.
Everything we would ever need to become rich and powerful and
sophisticated is within our reach. The major reason that so
few take advantage of all that we have is simply, neglect.
Neglect is like an infection. Left unchecked it will spread
throughout our entire system of disciplines and eventually
lead to a complete breakdown of a potentially joy-filled and
prosperous human life.
Not doing the things we know we should do causes us to feel
guilty and guilt leads to an erosion of self-confidence. As
our self-confidence diminishes, so does the level of our
activity. And as our activity diminishes, our results
inevitably decline. And as our results suffer, our attitude
begins to weaken. And as our attitude begins the slow shift
from positive to negative, our self-confidence diminishes even
more ... and on and on it goes.
So my suggestion is that when giving the choice of "easy to"
and "easy not to" that you do not neglect to do the simple,
basic, "easy"; but potentially life-changing activities and
disciplines.
