On Wednesday, Sept. 22, 199 Microsoft reported that an E-mail
that claims to be from Microsoft's support department offering
a fix for Y2K problems, is actually a virus that can cause
serious problems. It has been reported that there are as many
as eight different versions of the e-mail message circulating
about the Web.
The hoax E-mail arrives with an attachment called Y2Kcount.exe
that if executed, causes the virus to spread. The E-mail was
not sent by Microsoft, and the enclosed attachment is not a Y2K
countdown program, but rather a Trojan virus. If users try to
open the alleged program, the virus can install itself onto the
user's computer and can take files from a user's system and
send them across the Net. Users who simply open the email but
do not try to load the "Y2Kcount.exe" program are in no danger
from the virus.
If you receive this with the attachment, you should immediately
delete the message. Microsoft says it never attaches software
to e-mail messages, and advises that users visit its Y2K Web
site for any necessary patches relating to Y2K.

Stumbling blocks to Avoid

Profit by knowing the myths and learning from mistakes that
others have made. Save yourself hundreds, possibly even
thousands of dollars and hours of your valuable time.
"I can make money with No Work on the Internet"
In looking for that one right business you will read many
advertisements promising to make you a millionaire for Free.
This is a bunch of bull. Nothing in life is free and you
cannot make money by doing nothing.
Before committing yourself to any business you must ask
yourself a few questions:
***How much money do I want to make?***
***How much effort am I willing to commit to it?***
***How much time & energy can I devote to it?***
***How much money can I comfortably invest in it?***
Keep in mind that the amount of time you put into your new
business will directly relate to the amount of money you will
make from your new business. If you do not have the time, do
you have the money to pay someone else to do it for you? You
do not have to do it all yourself if you are financially able
to get help from others.
"The More I offer the more I will make"
This is so untrue! The Internet is all about specialized
Niche Marketing. You must have the one thing that no one else
has or you will just get lost in the millions of sites that are
not doing business and have to close shop. You need to
specialize in one type of product or service and make yours
unique. This does not mean that you cannot sell the same type
of item that others are, you just need to make what you are
offering much more unique and valuable.
You cannot stay focused when you are marketing many products
and services. It is always best to start with one product or
service --- learn all the ins and outs of promoting & marketing
it --- then if you would like to expand add only one very
related product or service at a time. Be sure you learn
everything you can about the product or service before adding
more.
"Build it and they will come"
This myth has enticed many people to believe that by just
having a website people will visit and you will start making a
ton of money. There is much more to it than that.
*Your website should look professional --- no spelling errors,
bad grammar or unexplained abbreviations.
*Do not add in a lot of flash --- no one likes waiting for
graphics to load. Many people do not use Java or the latest
plug-ins that add bells & whistles to a website. Do not use
music unless you give the visitors a way to turn it off.
*Be sure you use good keywords in your meta tags, give your
pages a good meta description and always remember to give your
pages a title. All of these things will make submitting your
site to search engines and directories much easier and help you
to obtain a good ranking in many of them.
Once your site is built you have to advertise it like crazy or
no one will ever know that your site exists.
"E-mail Marketing Really Works - I can e-mail everyone"
Yes, correct e-mail marketing is one of the best ways to sell
your product or service, but only when sent to the right,
interested people. Do not fall into the spam trap ---
believing that the trouble it will cause is worth the orders
you will receive. More than likely your order form will be
shut down long before you get all the orders that you thought
you would.
Keep in mind that there are people on the Internet who live for
the opportunity to flame, mail bomb and complain about SPAM to
your ISP.
Proper E-mail marketing will bring you many more orders. Do
not buy lists that you cannot verify as being opt-in lists.
Build a list of your own by setting up a newsletter or list
that updates people on your website and products ---- be sure
to only e-mail people that have requested information from you
or have asked to be on your list.
Many FFA and Free Classified site owners automatically add the
e-mail addresses of those that place a link or ad on their site
to their mailing lists ----- this is not truly allowing people
to opt-in. As much as some people believe this to be perfectly
acceptable, keep in mind that it also shows that the list owner
does not care if you truly want to be on their list or not
before you decide to use this method to build your list.
"I know what I'm doing, I don't need help"
This is the worst mistake you can make. If you purchase a
marketing plan you owe it to yourself to follow every single
word of it before you decide it is of no use. Asking for help
is your best way to learn the ropes and end up developing your
own success story.
Do not think that the info that you have purchased or requested
cannot possibly be perfect --- this is all to easy to do ---
but do not. Read every page, every word of advice and
implement it (unless you are told to do something that is
illegal or unethical). Give every piece of advice you receive
a chance before deeming it to be useless. You only hurt
yourself when you refuse to give a new idea a fair chance.
"I can make the wheel work even better"
Instead of struggling along without any help, look for the
person that is doing the best at it right now ---- study what
they do.... use what you learn to duplicate their success and
make it your own.
It has long been known that it is always best to follow the
success of others. Do not try to re-invent the wheel -- it
already works!
One last suggestion:
Find a mentor that is willing to see you through the good and
the bad. The best mentoring program I have yet to find it is
called The Internet Marketing Challenge. Jess O'Leary and
Kenny Mann, original creators of Link-O-Matic started this
terrific mentoring program about a year ago. Instead of
one mentor you will find many of the top Marketing
Professionals there to help you in every area of Marketing your

I encourage you to avoid the above myths and mistakes.
By doing so you could possibly save yourself hundreds (even
thousands) of dollars, hours, and a lifetime of wondering if
you could have done it differently.

*Most* Online Entrepreneurs Are Failing!...
Simply Because They Don't Know THIS:

People always ask me, "What kinds of webpage presentations work
best?" And "How do I go about making the best banner?"
"What
ads make the most money?" "Which press releases generate the
most traffic?"
I always answer, "The ones written backwards."
They always scream at me.
"What the hell does that mean!?!"
I calm them down and explain:
First, you need to find a large group of people that you know
you can get your webpage, ad, sign, TV commercial, banner,
press release in front of ... repeatedly ... for very low cost.
(They're all over the place; just pick one.)
Now, consider this group of people. What are they like? What
are their fears, desires, hopes? In short, what do they want?
Next, even if you don't need an ad, write an ad for it.
"An ad about what?!"
Telling them what they want.
"They already know what they want!"
Well, then, this is going to be easy: All you have to do is
tell them that you've got it!
"Got what? Where did I get it? I'm not even sure exactly
what it IS."
Precisely: You only discover exactly what it is while you're
writing.
"Are you drunk?"
Now you're being forward!
"I guess I didn't mean to be."
But I want you to try being BACKWARD.
And you do that by starting to write about what will excite
your audience, about what will ease their fears or fulfill
their needs. Make them salivate. Forget the grammar, ignore
the spelling; just write from enthusiasm. Not much more than a
first draft, mind you; but keep writing until the idea is so
specific that you're *certain* you don't have it.
"You're obviously GIVEN medication -- you're just not
SWALLOWING."
And make sure your copy is so exciting that even *you* want it.
Because then you're motivated enough to go out and find it, buy
it, join it, invent it, write it, make it, hire someone to do
that, ... or discover that you really had it all along, Toto.
(If none of that is possible, then start over again on another
idea about a different subject. Hence, "not much more than a
first draft.")
So, now you have an 'it' -- your Ultra-Web-Widget 9000, an
Employment-Opportunities-For-Hamsters Site, "Nuclear Arms
Negotiating For Dummies," or whatever. And you have the first
draft of your copy about it.
NOW you can maximize your copy's impact using benefit
translation, power phrases, branding, closing, repetition,
graphics, and all the rest.
But, as long as you began your idea "backwards," it will
actually be hard for you to not make some money from it.
(I know that it's made me a millionaire twice, and it's
proving itself again, now on the web.)

Betty,
Just wanted to let you know that I am a new subscriber to your
newsletter, and I find it very useful and informative. I am
still a work-at-home- wanna be, as I am developing my business on
the side while continuing my 9-5 day job, but your newsletter
inspires me and I know that one day my business will grow to the
pint where I can 'quit my day job' and go home for good.
I am writing about the following paragraph from today's issue.
As a subscriber, I would *not* want an ads only issue. As a
business person I can totally see the need ot have the ads in
there, but I believe that quality over quantity is the best way
to go here, and the only way you will achieve this is by charging
for ads. Even a very nominal fee will lessen the onslaught.

9/19/99 and 10/4/99. I have a very large backlog of Free Ads
which need to be published before I accept any new ads. Should
the submissions continue to be so large we will start an ads only
issue (with tips) on Wednesdays to keep up with it or I will
start to charge for ads --- it will be up to all subscribers to
let me know how they would like it dealt with. Thanks./--!snip>

It seems that most of the classified ads that I have responded
from your e-zine to are just gimmics. They are nothing more that
get rich quick schemes. I have responded to quite a few over the
past three months and I can say that not one has been legitimate.
Do you feel that it is fair that a Work from home e-zine publish
classifieds that are scams? I have relied on e-zines like yours
to help me look for work from home. I must say that I have had
no sucess whatsoever. Shouldn't your e-zine be careful when
selecting what classified ads to publish? Are they free to
publish on your e-zine? What is your feedback on this because I
have not really had much informative information nor have I found
that work from home job though your e-zine. I found work from
home by picking up the local classified section of my newspaper
and made several calls to several legitimate companies. That's
how I found work from home. Just thought I'd send you my feedback.

Dear Dawn,
The ads are placed by subscribers. The work-at-home jobs
listings are checked out and come from very reliable sources.
The ads are basically opportunities that others are offering just
like the ads that you have placed from time to time.
Scam is a pretty powerful word ---- I have to assume that every
ad you see is a scam since most of the ads that have been placed
in At Home Working News have been placed in many other e-zines on
the Net.
I do the best I can to make sure that ads are legitimate....
Unfortunately, I am not able to investigate each and every ad
that is placed.
