Creating Your Own Newsletter or E-zine

Since beginning my own newsletter I have received
many
requests for information on how to start your own e-zine.
In this article, I hope to give you some of the basics
as well as some sources that I used to help me to start
publishing "At Home Working News".
Your Newsletter should be about something that you know
about and are interested in. Publishing a newsletter is
a lot of hard work. When you write about something you
know about and enjoy it makes the work a lot easier.
If you want your newsletter to be successful and to stand
out amongst all the other newsletters out there I highly
suggest that you write your own original content. It is
not as hard as you may think. (Next week's article will
cover this subject in depth.)
Think about it --- how many e-zines do you get right now
where you see the same articles being published? Do you
really read each one, do you just scan through them, or
do you trash them because you just don't have the time or
just don't want to be bothered? Can you see why it is so
important to have original content in your newsletter?
You need to consider how you will manage your list and
send your publication out. You can do it yourself using
any number of software programs or a listserver if your
web host gives you access to one. You will have to learn
how to use the program and how to automate your subscribes
and unsubscribes or you will be spending all of your time
maintaining your list. The other option is to use a service
that will maintain the list for you. All you will have to
do is format your newsletter and send it to your list.
Keep in mind that some of these services are free while
others will charge you for the convenience and will not
add advertising to your newsletter.
You will want to have a crisp and clean format to your
newsletter. Do not use special characters for effect.
I found this out the hard way --- not all email programs
will be able to read the characters. There are many ways
to format your newsletter just be sure to have an index
so your readers will know where to find each section and
list your subscribe/unsubscribe instructions in each issue.
Your newsletter needs a name and a subtitle. The name should
be something catchy that will help to attract subscribers.
Your subtitle must be in every issue you publish, it will
help to distinguish you from all the other e-zines out there.
Decide on the features you want to include in your newsletter.
Articles, tips, reader feedback, contests, etc. Now you can
create a template for your newsletter. Be sure to save the
template so you can use it for each issue you publish.
Are you going to have ads in your newsletter? How much
will you charge? How many ads will you allow in each issue?
How long can the ads be? You better have this all planned
before you publish your first issue so that you can set the
ground rules and stick to them. Remember you do not have to
charge for ads - in fact you don't have to accept ads at all.
I do suggest that while you are trying to increase your
subscriber list that you offer free ads because it gives
people an incentive to subscribe and continue to subscribe
until they get hooked on your newsletter's style.
Write a Welcome to the Newsletter or Thank You for Subscribing
Message that will be sent to all new subscribers. In this
message you can include your policy for not selling, renting
or otherwise breaking the trust of having their e-mail address.
This is super important! If a new subscriber thinks you may
give out his/her address you will lose them. Of course, if
you do plan on giving out or selling the addresses do NOT state
that you can be trusted with their e-mail addresses.
Here is a short list of do's and don'ts for newsletters.
Do have unique and interesting content
Do use a nice layout with lots of white space
Do have more content than ads
Do include useful/helpful information & links
Don't blatantly advertise
Don't format so that people have to scroll to read
Don't overdo the ads
Don't make it into a salesletter

"The Ezine Explosion"

Ezines are rapidly becoming one of the most
popular marketing tools
on the internet! An ezine is an electronic magazine or newsletter
like our BizWeb E-Gazette. The number of ezines on the net has exploded
from a few hundred in 1993 to a number well into the thousands in 1998.
There are ezines on thousands of different subjects!
Before I go into details on ezine marketing, I must first explain the
difference between the two very distinct types of ezines on the net.
The first type of ezine is basically a web site. Anyone that has the URL,
or web address can check out the ezine. Some are free and others charge
a subscription fee. Although this type of ezine is very nice to look at
(graphics and sometimes audio included) the marketing value is not nearly
as strong as the next type.
The next type of ezine is delivered directly to your email address, like
our gazette. That's what makes it so popular with online marketers. Since
people don't have to actively seek out each issue, the marketing value
is boosted greatly.
These "email ezines" have begun to grow in number very rapidly, as more
and more people jump on the internet. Most of these are free and are
delivered weekly. Although not as fancy as a "web ezine", (most email
ezines are currently text only) this type of ezine has proven to be an
excellent marketing tool.
Take a look at the advertising section of your favorite email ezine.
The reason there are so many ads there is simple... ezine advertising
works! Not only do you reach your target audience, you reach them by
the thousands. Of all the online marketing methods available, this
could be the most effective. Many larger companies are just starting
to realize this and are starting to explore this exciting new advertising
medium. Compared with the high costs of web site banner advertising,
ezine advertising is a bargain!
